Inspire
This could be the most daunting task for some or the most exhilarating part of making art. It really just depends on how you allow your mind to perceive making art. Decide that this is an incredible opportunity for total freedom to create something amazing. Something you though of and brought from that thought in your mind to a tangible piece of art that other people can see and react to.
The exlporation stage is when you want to let your mind wander, think, and explore. Begin by writing the thoughts that are in your head. Putting your ideas onto paper is the first step. Don't evaluate any of your ideas, just get them out of your head and into your sketchbook. List, free write, brain storm, create mind maps, just get what ever is in your mind onto paper.
If this is proving to be a challenge for you sometimes exploring a new medium, technique, or experimenting with media you are familiar with will help you to get your mind off of forced thinking and into creating. The process of doing something else with your body will allow your mind to relax and let you use new materials. This might become the moment when your develop an idea or could envision how this medium could be used in your artwork.
For this class, spend about 2 hours exploring. Show your explorations in your sketchbook. Write, draw, experiment, in your sketchbook. If you practice media explorations in another place, keep your evidence of what you try. You might want to look at it later. Take photos of all pages in your sketchbook and new media exploratons.
One way to simplify a project concept or idea is to make a three column chart. The titles across the columns are Medium, Subject and Technique.
If you think of an idea, ask a question about that idea. Ask a question that does not have an answer that is simple to explain.
For example if your idea is Trees/Deforrestation you could ask the question: What would our world be like if we cut down every single tree on Earth? These kind of ideas and questions will lead you on a path that will produce a piece of art that will invite other people to wonder and ask questions too.
